SEVEN WANTED TO HIDE under her bed forever, but she had to go to school instead. The worst alternative to hiding, actually. It was bad enough everyone thought she had summoned the Nightbeast, but to have to endure the cardboard-adjacent pizza they got for lunch on Wednesdays was too much to ask.
âI can drive you,â Talis said as Seven ate breakfast the morning after her disastrous performance at the outdoor arena.
âItâll just look like Iâm scared if you do that. Iâll walk like I always do. Thanks, though.â
Fox put her hands on her hips. âWhat about Valley or Thorn? I havenât seen them around here in ages. Are you girls fighting?â
Seven cringed. Did her mom have mind-reading powers or something?!
âTheyâre just busy. Thornâs a champion, and Valley is always with Graves nowadays â¦â
Graves. The name only made Sevenâs stomach flip. She had to find out if she or Wren were the hexers if it was the last thing she did.
Talis and Fox looked at each other.
âAre you upset because youâd rather be spending time with Valley like Graves is, or ⦠?â
Seven was pulled out of her train of thought. âWhat? No, Mami, oh my goats.â Seven covered her face. âI donât like Valley that way!â
Seven really didnât, even though if she did, her mom and dad were the last people sheâd tell. And it wasnât because Valley was a girl. Seven didnât care much about that. In the past six months alone, sheâd had short-lived crushes on ten people in her class. Her brain was becoming a menace. Besides, there was ⦠maybe someone else she might like that way, she thought, thinking of ink-black hair and soft brown eyes.
âYouâre going to be thirteen this autumn. Itâs normal to have feelings for people and for those feelings to get confusing,â Talis tried.
âMom, Dad? I know youâre trying to help, but youâre killing me right now. It was just nice having Thorn and Valley around all the time, and now Iâm on my own more, thatâs all!â
âYou have me,â said Edgar from his tank.
âI know, Edgar, and I love you,â Seven said.
Her parentsâ eyes widened for just a moment, and then they seemed to remember, Ah yes, our daughter can literally speak to animals. It couldnât have been easy to get used to, but they were doing their best. She couldnât imagine what they would say if they knew about her monstruo powers. The Gran had tested her for any irregularities in her magic and had so far found nothing, but they were all still worried about her after the Nightbeast incident, and had decided Seven needed a break from her Uncle training while the Gran continued her testing. Ironically, she had never felt better, but she agreed, since it would give her more time to find the hexer. So long as nobody found out, she wouldnât end up like Delphinium.
âA protest broke out overnight in Boggs Ferry as unrest surrounding Spares and their place in the Twelve Towns grows,â said Tiordan Whisperbrew from the small telecaster in their kitchen.
